BBC: Water Firms Sending Out 'Unacceptable' Fake Debt Letters

According to research from the BBC, more than half of water companies are sending out ‘unacceptable’ debt letters.

You and Yours on Radio 4 found out that 12 companies had done this, and five said they still are, or may do in the future.

The letters which appear to come from external solicitors or debt collection agencies, are actually from the water companies themselves.

Energy regulator Ofgem described similar practices by energy suppliers as ‘unacceptable’.

Ofwat the UK’s water watchdog, has written to suppliers telling them that the same principle should apply.
